For winemakers Greg Kitchens and Gloria Mercado-Martin, the crafting of our namesake Don & Sons wines is one of the highlights of the annual winemaking cycle. Having both lived and worked in Sonoma County for so many years, they have a deep affinity for the region and the special wines that it produces—and a passion to share those riches with others. They begin with spectacular fruit sourced from vineyards almost literally in Greg’s own backyard, in an area known to locals as the Petaluma Gap.

The Petaluma Gap is located at the southern edge of the up-and-coming Sonoma Coast AVA. A typical day in “the Gap” sees morning fog, warm midday sun and brisk afternoon winds that give way again to a blanket of nighttime fog. The resulting temperature swings create the perfect conditions for growing cool-climate fruit displaying a unique balance of elegance, intensity and depth. Two grape varietals—Chardonnay and Pinot Noir—are known to thrive in these cooler environs, and it is no coincidence that they have become the focus of our Don & Sons Sonoma Signature Series.
